License To Kill is a documentary on Hate Crimes like no other. I highly recommend it. I have seen this video open minds like no other film. As a Diversity Instructor, I understand the importance of educating law enforcement officers on different cultures and building bridges. As a human being, I understand the importance of that bridge.
Home of the Brave is a documentary about the only white woman killed in the turbulant 1960s civil right movement. It is also about law enforcement's role (from the United State's President to the local police) in a "simple" homicide, government power unchecked, and the ripple effect of a murder. It will leave you asking "WHY?" over and over again, staring into the eyes of a portrait of a woman who only wanted to do the right thing, for a country who was doing the wrong.
Gavin de Becker has written the only books I recommend on self defense and safety. From the "red flags" of a dangerous child to the truth about terrorism, Mr. de Becker's books are informative, easy to read, and an excellent resource. I buy copies and give them as gifts!
For True Crime, few can match Ann Rule. Once a former police officer, Ms. Rule has been writing true crime for many years. I like the fact she is a victim's advocate and tells the human side of the story in her books, never focusing on the gore but instead on the investigation and those who "catch the bad guys (and gals!)."
I also recommend Mara Leveritt for true crime reading. Ms. Leveritt comes from a family of cops; her grandfather fought corruption in police and organized crime in Capone -era Chicago and her uncle was a Chicago Detective slain in the line of duty. She goes beyond true crime writing for she is an investigator's writer, digging for facts and truth and providing documentation for every word she pens.

And finally, how can you enjoy a great video or good book without a cat or dog curled up next to you? Winnsboro Animal Shelter in Texas can provide you with a "furever" friend. If you can't adopt, please donate. When I am preparing a class or writing a lecture, I have Duke next to me...once a homeless stray and now, thanks to Winnsboro Shelter, my best friend!
